SA: Twitter causes a stir in SA politics

By Tim Dornin

ADELAIDE, Feb 20 AAP - South Australian politics is all a twitter....about Twitter.

The internet's latest social networking site, that allows people to post updates about
themselves and follow the updates of others, has been embraced by Premier Mike Rann.

But it has also sparked a parody site, with the staffer of senior Liberal MP Rob Lucas
outed on Friday as the person behind a bogus Mike Rann Twitter page designed to take the
mickey out of the SA leader.

There has also been a parody site for Treasurer Kevin Foley, although …

Can you afford to stay in touch?
Byline: DAVID SHAMAH
Edition: Daily
Section: Economics
Type: News

A vacation these days isn't what it used to be. Once upon a time, when you went off to get away from it all, you got away from it all: the problems at work, the headaches in the neighborhood, the incessant "buzz" that accompanies modern life.

Now, of course, there's no getting away from anything. Instant communications, cellphones, laptop computers and a host of other "devices" ensure that we remain tethered to the buzz. Thanks to the Internet and its offspring, wifi and cellular data networks, you can remain "in touch" almost anywhere in the world - for better or worse.
But we're not here to wax philosophical about the lost world of travel - we're here to help those who feel they need to remain in touch with what's happening at home or work. While from a technology point of view you can connect to the Internet from almost anywhere in the world now, from a practical - i.e., financial - point of view, you really can't. Not unless you're ready to face a bill of as much as $1,000 for using the cellular Internet services offered by cellphone operators with whom you don't have a service plan!

That figure is not exaggerated, says Noam Lando of Webbing (www.iamwebbing.com), an Israeli start-up (now owned by 013Netvision) that has one solution to high cellphone data costs for Israelis abroad and tourists visiting Israel.

"We've come across numerous customers who have received bills that high when using their cellphone or other Internet-capable device on a cellular data network outside of Israel," he says. "We have what we think is a better solution: a cellular modem travelers can use to access the Internet at a far lower cost than the deals provided by cellphone service providers."

Each day, thousands of Israelis go abroad for business or pleasure, while thousands of tourists arrive for vacations here. One thing many have in common is a need for an Internet connection to stay in touch with the office, check e-mail, etc. Until Webbing came along, both groups had little choice but to use a cellphone service provider's Internet connection directly (with their devices in "roaming" mode) - a prohibitively expensive option, with rates of $10 per megabyte not uncommon.

Other options include finding a coffee shop that provides free wifi access (how much coffee can you drink?), or to pay for a wifi connection at a hotel or use a national wifi network (like Boingo). But those solutions, too, don't give you the freedom to connect anytime, anywhere - something you can really only do with a cellular data connection.

That's where Webbing comes in, Lando says. "We've negotiated prices for cell data connections with 40 of the world's largest cellphone service providers, providing very reasonable rates for anytime, anywhere connections," he says.

Before going abroad, users can rent a cell data modem from the company that allows connecting up to five devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop, etc.). The modem comes equipped with a data SIM card appropriate to the location you're visiting; in the US, for example, you get an AT&T data SIM card. Everything is all set up - you just connect your devices to the modem when abroad and surf! And, instead of paying $10 a megabyte, you pay about $10 a day - for unlimited surfing and data connection.

It's far cheaper than what you would pay on a roaming basis, Lando says, and it's also cheaper than you would pay if you were to use your own cellphone service provider's overseas surfing package. "For example, it's cheaper for Israelis to use our package abroad than it is to use packages from Pelephone or Orange," he says.

Not only that: Webbing's rates are even cheaper for Israelis using cell data connections from either of those companies inside Israel! "Our connection rates in Israel are indeed cheaper than the rates for cell data access from the cellphone companies," about 20% cheaper, Lando says. "We can do this by buying data connection time from them in bulk, which enables us to bargain for a better deal."

However, Webbing's intention is not to compete with the cellphone companies here, Lando says. "We offer domestic packages to Israelis basically as a marketing move, to get them to use our service here, so they will continue to use it when they go abroad," he says.

If you're going to use Webbing for your domestic surfing needs, you're going to want to buy one of their ZTE modems. Actually, you need to if you want to surf using their SIM card, because "we optimize the modems to work with the cards we provide, and that optimization is unavailable in generic modems," Lando says.

Still, it's not a bad deal. The modem costs about NIS 420 with VAT, and it's payable in up to 36 payments (that works out to NIS 11.60 a month). Five gigs of surfing per month is NIS 68.44 including VAT. The Orange site lists the company's 5GB surfing package at NIS 118.97 (although there are discounts when you buy a phone from them). And remember, you can use your Webbing 5GB on up to five devices. At least we didn't have to set up a Facebook page to get cheaper cellphone surfing!

QLD:Prison strike unlikely before Xmas: union

BRISBANE, Dec 14 AAP - A Queensland union says prison officers are unlikely to take
industrial action before Christmas after "productive" talks over workplace concerns.

Queensland Public Sector Union (QPSU) representatives on Tuesday met with Department
of Community Safety Director-General Jim McGowan and Queensland Corrective Services Commissioner
Kelvin Anderson.

The talks came after prison officers passed a no-confidence motion against senior jail
managers, accusing them of trying to resurrect a staffing policy they said had led to
escapes.

"The parties agreed on processes with the objective of resolving the issues of concern
by the end of January," a statement issued by the Department of Community Safety said.

QPSU spokesman Michael Thomas said the intervention of Mr McGowan, demanded by the
union, had been "very productive".

He said industrial action before Christmas now seemed unlikely.

"Certainly, that doesn't seem to be needed before Christmas," Mr Thomas told AAP on Tuesday.

"We've agreed to enter into some intensive discussions over the next few weeks, this
side and the other side of Christmas, with a view to resolving some of our concerns."

Mr Thomas said the union was concerned jail managers were pressing ahead with policy
changes, and proposed changes, without proper consultation.

The union is particularly worried about what it said was an attempt to reinstitute
a penny-pinching policy which meant some shifts went unfilled when prison officers were
ill.

The union has blamed the policy for past escapes, and says it endangers the safety
of prison officers.

Mr Anderson on Monday said the department would never introduce a rostering system
that put staff or jail security at risk.

NSW:Death near The Gap not suicide - coroner

KATRINA PLOY'S body was found at a beach near a notorious Sydney suicide spot but a
coroner has found she did not fall from the towering cliffs to her death.

Ms PLOY's personal belongings were found near The Gap at Watson's Bay in 2006 .. and
her body was discovered on a nearby beach several days later.

Deputy state coroner PAUL MACMAHON rejected evidence tendered at the inquest that 25-year
old Ms PLOY hired a hitman to kill her because she couldn't do it herself.

The coroner returned an open finding .. saying Ms PLOY's death did not result from
her own actions .. and although there is some suspicion around the death .. the available
evidence is insufficient to prove it.

Vic: Big Merv lays down law to fans

By Greg Roberts

MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - Former Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes has joined emergency
services groups in urging cricket fans to behave well during the traditional Boxing Day
Test.

The message today was: enjoy yourself but don't spoil the day for others, with at least
70,000 people expected at the MCG on Boxing Day to see Australia take on India.

The event has been marred by boozy patrons in the past, and the emergency services
groups also urged people to come along in large numbers but leave alcohol, racism and
the banned Mexican Wave at home.

"Come along, enjoy yourself, but just make sure your enjoyment doesn't disappoint other
people on the day," Hughes told reporters, including a large Indian media contingent,
at the MCG today.

"I think you have to warn people about the behaviour and especially the throwing incidents
(during the Mexican Wave).

"When you throw something up it's got to come down, and many times it hits people and
there's been injuries through that."

Hughes, who is a current Australian cricket team selector and a Victorian who was loved
by local crowds as a player, said he had always found Melbourne cricket fans "fantastic".

"My memories of Boxing Day are of 80,000 mad-keen sports fans, all Victorians, at the
MCG urging the Australian side to do very well and urging the Victorian players in the
side to do just a little bit better than the rest," he said.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said fans that planned to ruin the
day for others - especially through racism - should stay away. But he said there were
still tickets available for those who wanted to enjoy the match.

"I think Australian cricket fans have come to understand what acceptable behaviour
is, and we are not expecting any issues on that front," he said.

Racist crowd behaviour in Mumbai marred Australia's away series against India in October.

Police Superintendent Stephen Leane said a strong police presence would use CCTV cameras
to catch offenders, who they would evict from the ground.

"It's about respecting the rights and enjoyment of other people in the crowd and to
the players so they have the best event possible," he said.

Supt Leane warned patrons who throw projectiles that they face $215 fines, while police
will also visit licensed venues in and around Richmond near the ground to ensure the responsible
serving of alcohol during the first three days of the Test.

St John Ambulance officer Jonathon Cooper urged cricket fans to stay hydrated by drinking
water, and said 60 St John volunteers would be on hand at six first aid rooms at the ground.

Vic: Push for child killer laws to also target mums' inaction

By Catherine Best

MELBOURNE, Aug 17 AAP - Proposed tightening of laws for child killers should be expanded
to target spouses who turn a blind eye to home violence, a justice group says.

People Against Lenient Sentencing (PALS) president Steve Medcraft wants a charge of
culpable parenting introduced to prosecute parents who knowingly allow child abuse to
continue.

Mr Medcraft said children's lives could have been saved if mothers and parents were
more accountable for protecting their children against violent partners.

"Parents have to be responsible for their children's safety and you can't just say
'It's the violent de facto'," Mr Medcraft told AAP.

"If you're a part of that relationship, surely to goodness you can tell somebody or
make police aware that the partner is violent towards that child.

"A number of kids would be alive today if a charge like that had of been brought forward
or intervention had of been made earlier and there has to be mechanisms in place where
parents (can alert authorities).

"There must be some sort of helpline that the government can set up where parents can
go to to say that their child is being abused by a de facto or a parent."

The Victorian government is finalising new legislation designed to help encourage sentencing
judges to increase prison terms specifically handed down to child killers.

This week the minimum 10-year jail sentence was given to Melbourne man Stuart John
McMaster, who bashed to death his girlfriend's five-year-old son Cody Hutchings.

Mr Medcraft welcomed the toughening of laws for child killers but said it was too little
too late.

He accused Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls of "sitting on his hands" for too long
and ignoring victims.

It had taken a change of premier for the government to finally act, he said.

"We've been yelling and screaming for a number of years and we've had the door shut
in our face. But I think what's happened now is the hinges have broken and the door's
come down," Mr Medcraft said.

Fed:Risk of rate rise grows as consumers go on shopping spree

The chance of another interest rate has gained ground .. with two sets of government
figures showing last year's rate rises have done little to rein in spending.

That risks refuelling inflation pressures.

Bureau of Statistics figures show retail trade rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.9 per
cent in February to nearly 19 billion dollars.

Economists expected retail trade to rise 0.4 per cent.

At the same time .. building approvals surged by 10.6 per cent .. when economists expected
a rise of just 1.0 per cent.

The Reserve Bank holds its monthly board meeting tomorrow and will announce its decision
on Wednesday morning.

Before the data only a minority of economists expected another rate rise this week
.. given the surprising strength of the economy since the start of the year.

SA: Sheep killed in SA bushfire

ADELAIDE, Dec 1 AAP - About 70 sheep have died in a bushfire in South Australia's Barossa Valley.

The blaze also destroyed a small pine tree plantation late yesterday as it burnt through
about 360 hectares at Eden Valley.

More than 70 firefighters converged on the scene overnight, bringing the fire under control.

They were expected to remain there today to continue mopping up.

The blaze was one of several causing concern for the Country Fire Service (CFS) after
three days of soaring temperatures across the state.

The largest was a series of fires burning in the Riverland which had destroyed 30,000
hectares of scrub since a lightning strike on Monday.

A CFS spokeswoman said about 125 firefighters were deployed to the area yesterday and
more were expected to join the battle today.

Work this morning would include strengthening of control lines on the southern boundary
through a backburning operation.

Other fires were burning at Bog Lane in the south-east of the state, in the Hincks
Conservation Park on the Eyre Peninsula and in the Pinkawillinie Conservation Park on
the west coast.

Sydney's M5 East tunnel has reopened after a computer failure saw it blocked for four
hours during the morning traffic rush.

The tunnel was closed in both directions at 6am (AEDT) after the malfunction shut down
the M5's safety surveillance cameras.

Baulderstone Hornibrook corporate director PAUL LEVINS says it's too unsafe to operate
the 1.4-kilometre tunnel without footage.

A Roads and Traffic Authority spokesman says the tunnel was reopened at 10.15am.

The closure caused congestion in a five-kilometre radius of the tunnel, affecting St
