Vic: Students, academics picket Melbourne Uni

MELBOURNE, Dec 8 AAP - A joint student-staff picket of Melbourne University will continue
today in support of industrial action by university academics which has delayed exam results.

The picket line assembled in front of the University of Melbourne's administration
building yesterday with the intention of blocking the release of end-of-year results.

Academics in the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) have been warring with the
university over a pay and conditions deal.

Staff last week banned the release of exam results in an attempt to speed up negotiations,
but the university retaliated by standing down eight staff.

Acting vice-chancellor Professor Sally Walker said the protest had not stopped the
release of results, most of which were published electronically today.

The Melbourne University Student Union has demanded the reinstatement of the eight
stood-down staff and a promise that no other staff would be stood down.

Melbourne University has ignored the students' demands.
